Measuring good society

How does our society measure up? It has been said that good society is judged by how its most vulnerable members are treated. Tonight I heard the Child Safety Commissioner, Bernie Geary, talking about how children are the social group most offended against. Obviously its vital that our children are protected against all forms of abuse. Its also important that we find ways to heal those who have been hurt and begin to repair the trauma they have experienced. Finally, we need to seriously consider why children are being victimised to begin with. Their vulnerability may make them an easy target, but what is it that drives some people to take advantage of that target? These are foundational questions that deserve much consideration if we are to ever live in the kind of society we might hope for.
