Today was the beginning of the 125th Anniversary celebrations for The Salvation Army Brunswick. We held a Community BBQ and recognised the contributions of many volunteers to our work. Not only did a lot of those who are regularly a part of the various services we run attend, but also a good number from the local community and some of our partner organisations. As usual, we celebrated with good food and music.
Volunteers are vital, not just because they provide much needed service, but in many cases our volunteer contributions are made by people who have at some stage been recipients of our services. It's important for them to be able to move from being a service user to a service provider and to know that their work is valued. The difference this can make to someone's self-image, to their sense of dignity, should not be overlooked. Thanks to all those who have given volunteer service to The Salvation Army anywhere!
