The Rock of Compassion
A reading from Walter Brueggemann this morning introduced the phrase 'rock of compassion'. At first the words seemed rather antithetical, but after some thought the idea began to grow upon me. When compassion is allowed to flow freely, as it should, there is a danger that at some point it will run out. We may need something firm to hold on to, something strong that can refocus us on the reason that we should continue to give generously - beyond what may even appear to be reasonable at times. Compassion is not a weak idea but an incredibly powerful force which can and should change us.
