How to Worship

One of the essay topics that I set at the Training College each year asks how working with the poor might be described as worship. Fundamental to this question is a definition of worship as our response to God's presence in the world. If we believe that God is compassionate and just, and that this God is found especially amongst the poor and marginalised, then embracing mission amongst the poor as a form of worship isn't a difficult step.

The difficult question that inevitably arises next is what implications this has for our gathered worship. How do our Sunday meetings reflect the presence of the poor amongst us? We need to be careful not be patronising here and to really ask who the form and content of our meetings is designed for. Jesus spent most of his time amongst the poor - if our churches don't reflect this, then we might well wonder who we are worshipping...
