Sapiential Eschatology

John Dominic Crossan is possibly the best authority on historical Jesus studies in the world today. He contrasts two distinct viewpoints on the nature of Jesus' eschatological missioin:

Apocalyptic eschatology is world-negation stressing imminent divine intervention: we wait for God to act; sapiential eschatology is world-negation emphasizing immediate divine imitation: God waits for us to act.
– John Dominic Crossan, The Essential Jesus: Original Sayings and Earliest Images (1998), p. 8

It may be obvious that I am a big fan of the second interpretation. To me, this makes sense of Jesus proclamation and living out of the Kingdom of God as an alternate social reality.
