I was privileged today to be present at the opening of a new venture called Sanctuary, which will provide accommodation for 20 single male asylum seekers in Brunswick. The project impressed me for 2 key reasons:
Firstly, it caters to the needs of a highly disadvantaged social group who receive no Centrelink income, have no access to Medicare and frequently are unable to work. Secondly, it is a joint project between Baptcare, the Brunswick Baptist Church and Hotham Mission (Uniting Church). The combination of 2 denominational church agencies and a local congregation will help to provide a holistic response of care and professional service to the residents who are seeking sanctuary.
Its unfortunate that this kind of partnership doesn't happen more within The Salvation Army, who are ideally placed to pull these kind of efforts together.
