Matthew's gospel shows repeated concern for 'the little ones', 'the least of these'. In some cases, this would seem to suggest children, in other cases it may be Christians, other have argued that it refers to the poor and the marginalised. Perhaps we could read it simply as 'the vulnerable' - those who are not aligned with the dominant forces of society; those who are powerless and often reliant upon the goodwill of others for their own survival.
Christians should be prompted to think about their relationships to the power structures of the world. How does our relationship to governments shape the way that we demonstrate care to 'the little ones'?
