Budget time

It's the budgeting time of year for our social services again which means that I spend far too much time thinking about money and worrying about where its going to come from. Invariably when we add up all of the projected expenses for the coming financial year, we end up with a significant gap between what we need and what we have coming in. There's only so many times you can cut back on operating expenses before you realise that there's just not enough money coming in.

Now I don't mean to sound ungrateful. We are very well supported on the whole, it's just that the demands on our services continue to increase year after year. With the cost of housing, utilities and petrol all continuing to rise, it seems unlikely that things will get much better in the short term. I sometimes think of the story where Jesus pays his taxes with a coin from the mouth of a fish and feel a bit cheated by that example.

Well, perhaps its time to go fishing...
