Life's ups and downs

We all know that life has its ups and downs, but it wasn't until I went to speak about it today that I realised how many great scriptural examples there are of these bumps in our journey....

Moses on Mt Sinai is a nice example. Moses goes up the mountain and meets with God. He's so high on the divine presence that he becomes all shiny. But when he comes down the mountain and finds out that in his absence the people have begun to worship a golden calf, it brings him abruptly back into reality.

The story of Jesus transfiguration is a similar example. Another bright, shiny, mountaintop occasion, this time with Jesus, a few of his disciples, Moses and Elijah. Yet the coming down from the mountain brings them into the frustration of being unable to heal someone.

Today is Palm Sunday - a day of celebration but already the shadow of the cross is looming. Life may have its ups and downs but the scriptures remind us that we don't have to go through these alone.
